The Shopify Wholesale Channel Is Gone — Here's What Replaced It
If you searched for the Shopify Wholesale Channel and landed on a dead help page, you are not lost. Shopify retired it. These are the four things merchants actually moved to, and the trade-off in each.
What the Wholesale Channel was
The Wholesale Channel was a Shopify Plus feature that spun up a separate, password-protected storefront on a `/wholesale` path. Buyers logged in, saw their own price list, and checked out without ever touching the retail store.
It was Plus-only, it ran as a second storefront with its own theme, and it was retired in favour of Shopify's newer B2B objects. Merchants who relied on it woke up needing a replacement they had not budgeted for.
The four replacement paths
1. Native Shopify B2B (companies + catalogs)
Shopify's built-in B2B is genuinely good: company records, locations, payment terms, and per-company catalogs. It is also Plus-only, which means roughly $2,300/month before you price a single SKU. If you are already on Plus, start here.
2. A wholesale app on your existing store
Apps layer customer-tag pricing onto your live storefront. Cheapest path, and it works — until your retail conversion optimisations start fighting your B2B logic in the same theme, and every theme update becomes a regression risk.
3. A separate B2B portal on its own domain
The closest structural match to the old Wholesale Channel: buyers log in somewhere else entirely, see only their prices, and their orders land back in your Shopify admin as draft orders. Your retail theme is untouched.
4. Manual quoting
Email a PDF price list, key the order in as a draft order yourself. Viable under about 15 accounts. The labour cost overtakes any software bill somewhere around order 30 per month.
How to choose in one afternoon
- Already on Shopify Plus and happy with it → native B2B, no third party needed.
- Under ~15 wholesale accounts, simple flat discount → a tagging app is fine.
- Tiered or negotiated per-SKU pricing, buyers who reorder → a separate portal.
- Your prices and stock live in an ERP → a portal plus a sync layer, or your price list is stale within a week.
The three things to check before you commit
First: does the replacement touch your theme? Anything that installs into your live theme is a permanent upgrade tax. Hasil uses an Admin API token only — no theme edits, no app-store install.
Second: does it hold your money? A system that collects wholesale payments itself sits between you and your funds. Draft orders keep settlement inside your own Shopify Payments account.
Third: what happens on day 400? Price lists rot. Ask how prices are updated in bulk, how they expire, and what an audit trail looks like when a buyer disputes what they were shown.
Migrating off the old channel without downtime
Export your wholesale customers with their tags, rebuild them as customer groups, then rebuild each price list against SKUs rather than product titles — titles change, SKUs do not. Run both in parallel for two weeks and reconcile order totals before you send the switch-over email.
Setup on a portal like Hasil is an Admin API token, a customer import, and a price list — about three minutes to a working login, then however long your catalog review takes.
Frequently asked
- Why did Shopify remove the Wholesale Channel?
- It was consolidated into Shopify's newer B2B feature set, which uses company records and per-company catalogs on the main storefront instead of a separate wholesale storefront. The B2B replacement remains a Shopify Plus feature.
- Do I need Shopify Plus to sell wholesale in 2026?
- No. Plus is required for Shopify's native B2B, but tag-based apps and external B2B portals both run on standard Shopify plans and write orders back as draft orders.
- Can I keep my existing wholesale prices when I migrate?
- Yes, if they are keyed to SKUs. Export your customer tags and price lists, map them to customer groups, and rebuild against SKU rather than product title so future catalog edits do not break them.
- Will a wholesale portal change my retail storefront?
- It should not. Hasil runs on a separate portal domain and connects with an Admin API token, so nothing is installed into your live theme.
