Shopify B2B vs Shopify Plus: What Wholesale Merchants Actually Need
Shopify Plus is great. Plus's B2B feature set is good. They are not the same product — and assuming one solves the other is the most expensive mistake in this category. Here's the honest comparison.
What you actually get with Shopify Plus B2B
Plus's B2B features (introduced in 2023, expanded since) give you: company accounts with multiple buyer logins, catalogue and price-list gating per company, payment terms, and a B2B-only storefront option.
What you don't get out of the box: volume-break pricing without code, per-SKU MOQs at the product level, native draft-order workflow for emailed POs, or any ERP sync. Plus assumes you'll build or buy those.
And the price floor: Plus starts at roughly $2,300/month. That's the entry ticket before you add a single B2B-specific app.
When Plus B2B is the right answer
Plus B2B genuinely wins when:
- You're already on Plus for other reasons (volume, scripts, multi-store).
- Your buyers want a self-serve catalogue experience that feels exactly like retail — same theme, same checkout, just different prices.
- Your ops team is fine living inside Shopify admin and you don't need ERP integration.
- Your account count is small (under ~50 companies) and you don't need volume breaks or complex MOQ logic.
When a dedicated wholesale app on standard Shopify wins
A dedicated wholesale tool (Hasil Pricing, Sparklayer, Wholesale Gorilla, B2B Wave) wins when:
- You're on Basic/Shopify/Advanced and the jump to Plus is not justified by retail volume alone.
- You need real volume-break pricing, per-product MOQs, or tier-specific shipping rules.
- Your wholesale buyers are operationally different from retail — they want a separate login URL, gated catalogue, draft-order-from-PO flow.
- You need clean ERP sync (Odoo, NetSuite, Dynamics) without a custom integration build.
The cost delta is dramatic: a standard Shopify plan ($79–$399/mo) plus a wholesale tool ($29–$300/mo) is a fraction of Plus B2B and often delivers more wholesale-specific functionality.
The decision in one line
If you'd pay for Plus anyway for retail reasons, use Plus B2B. If you're upgrading to Plus mainly to unlock B2B, stop — a dedicated wholesale tool on your current plan almost always wins on cost and on wholesale-specific features.
